Everyone knows about Moreton and North Stradbroke Island, but what about the smaller islands of Moreton Bay? There is a great blog post called Islands of Moreton Bay which is a great summary of the smaller islands of these smaller islands, like Russell, Lamb and St Helena Islands.

I love the islands; I've lived on one of them for six years now and still feel that I am on holiday.
Unfortunately, while agreeing that the islands of Moreton Bay are amazing, the notes that you refer to are misleading and inaccurate:
1. "Coochie Mudlo" island despite some romantics who would like to turn back the clock, is officially gazetted, postcoded, mapped and charted as Coochimudlo.
2. Flinders landed on Coochie on 19 July 1799--that is nearly 210 years ago not 200. Coochie celebrated the arrival in 1999 with a re-enactment that has continued ever since. It is a great fun day each year.
3. Macleay and Russell Islands have a population of around 2000 each according to the Census Bureau. They are most famous for the land scams of the 1970s when they were split into thousands of tiny unsewered lots by unscrupulous developers. No public transport and few of the roads have been finished. Worth visiting just to see how development should not be done. The frequent barge and fast ferry transport to the islands and the opportunities for quiet waterway pursuits such as sailing and kayaking though are wonderful. We have tee shirts that say we are the best kept secret in Moreton Bay.
3. "Napoleon Bonaparte" was the name of a troublesome aboriginal tribesman of North Stradbroke. He was sent into exile on the island in 1828 over a decade after his european namesake had been sent to St Helena in the South Atlantic. Of course they had to call it "St. Helena" and it stuck.
4. Moreton Bay has over 300 islands ranging from the retirement area of Bribie, the wilderness of Moreton and the great surfing and history of North Stradbroke through to ones that almost disappear at high tide and a decent wind. (Bizarrely, very popular for wedding ceremonies!) Each has a story to tell even if it is just a list of the number of boats that have gone aground or the people who have been accidentally marooned.
5. The sharks are not just at St.Helena--they are ubiquitous throughout the waterways and need respect. A woman was taken by two at Amity on North Stradbroke only two years ago.
But this story misses the biggest attraction of these islands: they are surrounded by the sealife of the Moreton Bay Marine Park--dugongs, dolphins, stingrays and turtles regularly greet the visitor at every turn. And, with the creation of new artificial reefs and increasing restrictions on fishing, the story will only get better in the future.
