Since the oil spill a lot of people have been concerned about the effect it may have on wildlife in the area. So we went straight to the source and got in touch with Dr Kathy Townsend who is the manager of research and education at The University of Queensland's Moreton Bay Research Station.

With one pelican (pictured) captured and well on the way to a speedy recovery Kathy and others including Straddie Wildcare Rescue and Pelican and Seabird Rescue have been out on the seas daily looking for other pelicans and sea birds that may have been affected. The centre remains on standby as a triage centre if any other animals are captured over the next couple of days.
Kathy also had a good tip for us which she got from the head Aquarist at Underwater World. Plain mayonnaise is the trick for removing oil from hard-shelled animals such as turtles and crabs!
If anyone spots any birds coated in oil – identifiable by a dark discolouration on the feathers – call the Pelican and Seabird Rescue on 0404 118 301.
